Commentary on the Craft

In order to create the elaborate visual style of THE MATRIX, hundreds of illustrations were created. Comic book artists Steve Skroce (GAMBIT) and Geof Darrow (HARD BOILED) each flew from their respective locales in Canada and France to California, where they spent three months working closely with Larry and Andy Wachowski, the directors, to map out the film.

Geof handled the designs, the fetus fields, the Doc Bot, the Fetus Harvester, the interior of the Nebuchadnezzar, among other things. While at the next table, Steve translated the script to storytelling pages. Between the two, they helped the directors' clearly introduce the intense imagery and insanely complicated action sequences to the studios.

Getting top-notch artists involved resulted in illustrations of a caliber far above the typical, bringing an energy rarely seen in storyboards. While we can't show them all, we've gathered a healthy collection here.
